Not long ago I was teaching my son Matthew how to drive. Yikes! Here in Oregon we have many gray days and I told him that he needs to always have his headlights on even during the day. At first he was a bit cocky saying “I don’t need the lights, I see just fine. It’s not dark.” I told him, “during the daytime, especially on gray days, the lights are not to help you see but to help other drivers see you.” A few moments later we could see cars coming towards us and all but one had their headlights on. That one car was very hard to see since it was a gray day and the car was silver. Matthew was shocked that it was his friend driving the silver car.
When he got to school he told his friend how his car was so hard to see and how it blended in with the surroundings. Later that week it was a sunny day and I again reminded him to turn on his headlights. “Why? It’s so bright and sunny out.” I pointed out that when the sun is behind us it helps other drivers to see us which makes the road safer for us.
The phrase “Be safe, Be seen” was used many time. Sure enough, he started to agree that the ones with their lights on were noticeable, which made him an aware driver. I have met drivers who have this arrogant, “I don’t need light to see the road” mentality. They don’t think that other drivers would like to see their light. It is easier to gauge the speed of on coming traffic if their lights are on.
With my walk of faith I know that scriptures say that I must let my light so shine that people will see it. It does no one any good if the light is turned off. It also says that if the gospel be hid, it is hid to them that are lost, because this world has blinded the minds of those who do not believe in case the light of the gospel should shine on them. For God who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, has shined in our hearts.
When I think of the word Radiate I picture light shining out 360 degrees as in all directions for everyone to see. A Radial pattern is one that appears to radiate from a point, like the spokes from the hub of a wheel. Our hope cannot radiate for other travelers in life if we refuse to turn on the light.
The bible is a lamp for my feet and a light to my path, that is enough for me to see clearly to walk in faith. I must radiate that light outward so those who stumble in darkness have light enough to see the hope I have when the world has little hope to offer them.

Hi Natalie, normally I blog “The Word of the Day” from The Daily Post. Today, I am commenting. I love the story of the ‘rebellious’, (in a good way), teenager! I remember those days of endless disagreements, as I raised a teenage boy too! A new and exciting growth from childhood to adolescence and learning new things and having greater expectations for their future adulthood. I still have that same, {almost}, “banter” with my husband. Sometimes he scares me, mostly to get a rise out of me, where I say something argumentative. In the past, I have relentlessly, argued with “don’ts” and “do-s”, “why-s”, and “how come’s”; however, today, with radiating toward God’s Word and God’s timing, my walk in faith is growing deeper in believing that letting my light shine with a smile and a nod and an occasional “ooh”. As I reflect back on scripture from 1 John where God is light, in Him there is no darkness. Where the deception of saying we have fellowship with God, but we do and live spiritual darkness. But living in the RADIANT LIGHT of God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit, we are cleansed from our sins and we, too, say and do RADIANT LIGHT!!!!

Truly indeed that the Word is the light and it radiates for us to see and seek Him.

It is true that arrogance prevents people from learning. Silver is usually thought as being a very safe color for a car, but different lighting conditions can change everything.

Very enlightening. 😉 It seems to be human nature to evaluate things initially based on it’s benefit to ourselves (like when I think headlights are unnecessary, because *I* could see without them), but it’s also to help other drivers see my own vehicle. 🙂 You shine with the radiance of Christ. 🙂
