On Christmas day I went to see the new Star Wars movie and must confess that I found it entertaining. Afterwards, my son and I engaged in “cinema sin” conversation as we took the movie apart and pointed out flaws, or, “sins” in the production. Like having Princess Leia flying in space like Peter Pan when she had no real role in the rest of the show. It would have been a perfect time to let her die. That led us to talk about the passing of Carrie Fisher almost a year ago.
Lately, I often find myself wondering where a soul is after they die. Like a few months ago my former husband died, and I still find myself thinking about his soul and where he might be. I think eventually as we grow older, every human on earth has an opinion about spirituality. We all in one way or another will admit, acknowledge, reveal, disclose, divulge, avow, declare, or profess an opinion on the subject of life after death and spirituality. Believers confess their faith in the presence of God, atheists confess their faith in the absence of God. Others will confess their belief in mother nature, the great spirit or the universal cosmos. We all confess.
Believers find hope and comfort in the faith that God is real and therefore confess this belief in the hope that others will also find eternal salvation. The bible says in Romans 10:9-10 “that if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord, and believe in your heart that He has risen from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with the heart that you believe and are justified and it is with your mouth you confess and are saved.”
Many do not believe this. Perhaps they confess their belief that there is no God, or that there is no soul or life after death.
There is something about the word Confess that implies that it is voluntary based on our own subjective beliefs. “I believe therefore I speak, or I think and therefore I hypothesize.” This is a voluntary declaration.
To Confess is also to admit or acknowledge something reluctantly, typically if someone feels somewhat ashamed or embarrassed. We then admit, concede, grant, allow, own, declare, and affirm.
The Bible says in Philippians 2: 9-11
“Therefore God also has highly exalted Him and given Him the name which is above every name, 10 that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under the earth, 11 and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

It doesn’t say that only those who believe in Jesus will confess He is Lord, which they do freely in this life, but that every tongue will confess that Jesus is Lord. Those who don’t believe during their lifetime will, with great sorrow no doubt, confess that Jesus is the Lord they refused, denied, and rejected. These reluctant confessors are those who are dead in sin. Their name is not in the book of life. Their sin is not judged on the cross because they rejected the one who died on the cross to pay the penalty for their sin so they could live in His resurrection. There is only one way to have eternal life and that way has a name. Jesus.
Every human ever born will confess that Jesus is Lord. Voluntarily in faith or involuntarily in fear.
John 1:12 “But as many as received him, to them gave he the power to become the children of God, even to them that believe on his name:”
