The winter solstice has always been my favorite day of the year. At 7:59 AM this morning a wonderful change took place in the heavens. The wondrous pause when the Earth stopped tilting away from the sun.
In the northern hemisphere, today is the shortest day and the longest night of the year. It is odd that here in the Pacific Northwest, that the first day of winter is also when the dark days have reached an end and the icy fingers of the night start to losen their grip.
The Romans celebrated Dec 21-25 declaring Sol Invictus. The Unconquered Sun will rise and the days will grow longer.
I’m thankful that God created this in nature. Today reminds me that God sent his Son to save us from the darkness of sin. We celebrate the birth of Jesus on Dec. 25th. not because that is his birthday, but, to celebrate the day when the Unconquerable Son was given to save sinful mankind.
In Acts 25:18 Jesus tells Saul that he would be a witness to the gentiles;
“To open their eyes, and to turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan unto God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins, and inheritance among them which are sanctified by faith that is in me.”
To those who feel like they are in a dark place, remember that there is an end of darkness. It is in Jesus, in John 1:1-5 it is written;
“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 The same was in the beginning with God. 3 All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made. 4 In him was life; and the life was the light of men. 5 And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not.”
Call on the name of Jesus in this time of darkness and uncertainty. Let his light shine in your heart and life. Let this wonderful day remind you that the days will once again grow longer as the Earth slowly tilts toward the sun.
Have hope. There will be an end to spiritual darkness by the light of the Unconquerable Son of God.
